Understanding Skin Tags

Skin tags are small, soft growths that often hang off the skin by a little stalk. They’re completely harmless and really common, especially in areas where your skin folds or rubs, like the neck, underarms, eyelids or under the breasts.

They can be the same colour as your skin or a bit darker, and are usually smooth, though sometimes slightly uneven. While they don’t usually cause problems, they can get caught on clothes or jewellery and become irritated.

Causes of Skin Tags

Skin tags, also known as acrochordons, are small, harmless growths that often appear where skin rubs together or against clothing, like the neck, underarms or groin. While the exact cause isn’t clear, several factors seem to play a part.

Friction from skin or clothing can trigger their growth, especially in areas with folds. Genetics may increase the likelihood, and hormonal changes, like during pregnancy or with conditions such as diabetes, can also contribute. They tend to become more common with age. Some research links them to insulin resistance, and there may be a connection to certain strains of HPV.

Most lesions will respond to a single treatment. However, some deeper lesions may take several aggressive treatments to get results. Cryopen skin tag removal is generally considered permanent for the treated area. While the treated lesion is gone for good, new moles or skin tags can still develop in other areas.
